All students must have an acoustic piano or a digital piano for home practice. The quality of your student’s home instrument plays a significant role in their potential for success. Acoustic pianos should be tuned at least once a year, and kept in working order. If you prefer a digital piano, please invest in a full-size keyboard (88 keys) with weighted, touch-sensitive keys and pedals. The piano should be accompanied with proper lighting and a bench of appropriate height. I highly encourage students to have a real acoustic piano after 1-2 years of lessons.
Lessons run a minimum of once a week with lengths of 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. The length of lessons is subject to availability and student ability. Many beginners will start with 45 minute lessons and increase from there during the course of their study.
This depends on the child: The youngest piano student I’ve started with was four years old. However, I have also suggested some students wait until 6 or 7 years old to have their first piano lesson. To be ready to take piano lessons, a child needs to have reached a basic level of concentration and fine motor skills that will sustain them through their first lessons. Most children will acquire these skills quite well on their own with time. While some children develop these skills quite quickly, some take longer to blossom than others. It is important not to rush kids into lessons and ensure that they have a positive introduction to learning the piano.
There is no charge for the introductory session. This is an opportunity for you to see the studio, meet the teacher, enjoy a mini-lesson, and get answers to any questions you may have about piano lessons, instruments, tuition and scheduling.
Yes! Most adults start as beginners. Some have taken lessons as children. Adult students currently range in age from mid 20’s to 70’s. It is fun and fulfilling to play the piano no matter what your age!
That partly depends on the age of the student. Teen and adult beginners should plan on at least a half hour each day. More advanced pianists should plan on up to an hour and more a day. Of course, the more you practice as you are instructed, the faster you will get where you want to be with playing the piano. Try to practice every day at a regularly scheduled time.
Absolutely – Yes. I incorporate it directly into the piano lessons and do not treat it as a separate discipline.
There is no set answer how long it takes to learn an instrument. With regular practice a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of my students take lessons a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
